Most perfume is mostly alcohol. In a typical eau de parfum, around four-fifths of the liquid is alcohol, the delivery system that throws the scent into the air when you spray. Alcohol-free perfume swaps it for oil. The fragrance is the same kind of blend, but the way it behaves on your skin is completely different.
What "alcohol-free" actually means
In an alcohol-free perfume oil, the fragrance concentrate is blended into a carrier oil instead of alcohol, usually a light, odourless one. Nothing evaporates in the first few minutes, so there's no sharp opening. The scent warms on your skin and releases slowly through the day.
One thing worth knowing: a perfume oil always has a carrier. A bottle sold as "100% pure perfume oil" is either not what it says, or not something that should go on your skin undiluted. We explain why in our guide to pure oil vs perfume oil.
Our roll-ons are perfume oils: a high concentration of fragrance in a skin-safe carrier, with no alcohol at all. Every one of our 31 scents comes in this format.
Who alcohol-free perfume suits
Sensitive or dry skin
Alcohol can sting freshly shaved skin and dry out skin that's already dry. An oil doesn't. That said, fragrance materials themselves can irritate some people, with or without alcohol. If you have a known fragrance allergy, check the ingredients on the product page and try a little on your inner arm before wearing it properly.
If you avoid alcohol for religious reasons
Many people who avoid alcohol for reasons of faith wear perfume oils. Attar, fragrance distilled into sandalwood oil, has been worn this way across South Asia and the Middle East for centuries. Our roll-on oils contain no alcohol at all. Our Parfum sprays, by contrast, are alcohol-based.
Anyone who wants scent close, not loud
An oil sits near the skin: the person across the desk notices it, the rest of the room doesn't. That makes it the easy choice for offices, classrooms and anywhere you work close to other people.
Hot weather
Heat makes alcohol evaporate faster, which can turn a spray sharp on a hot day. An oil opens gently in the warmth instead of losing its top notes all at once.
Travel and everyday carry
A 3ml or 5ml roll-on takes up almost no room in a pocket, a gym bag or a liquids bag, and a 3ml is good for around sixty wears.
How it smells different from a spray
- No blast at the start. Sprays open loud and settle down. Oils start quietly and grow as they warm.
- It stays closer. Expect a scent that's there for the people near you rather than a trail across a room.
- It lasts well on skin. With nothing to evaporate, the scent releases slowly. Most of our blends wear for six hours or more, and the heavier ambers and ouds go considerably longer.
How to apply perfume oil
- Start with clean, moisturised skin. Fragrance holds better on skin that isn't dry.
- Roll once over each pulse point: wrists, the base of your throat, behind your ears. Oil is concentrated, so one pass is plenty.
- Leave it to settle. Don't rub your wrists together; it warms the top notes away faster.
- Keep it off delicate fabrics. Oil can mark silk and pale cotton, so apply before you dress.
- Warm the bottle in your hand in cold weather. Oil sits very close to the skin in the cold, and a little warmth helps it open.
- Top up in the afternoon if you want more presence. A roll-on in your pocket makes it easy.
The honest downsides
- Less projection. If you want to be noticed across a room, a spray does that better.
- It can mark fabric. Apply to skin, then dress.
- It isn't a guarantee for sensitive skin. Removing alcohol removes one common irritant, not all of them.
Oil or spray: a quick comparison
| Roll-on oil | Parfum spray | |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Carrier oil, no alcohol | Alcohol |
| Opening | Soft, warms up | Bright and immediate |
| Projection | Close to the skin | Carries across a room |
| Best for | Work, heat, sensitive skin, travel | Evenings, cold weather, being noticed |
| Sizes | 3ml, 5ml, 10ml, from £5.99 | 30ml, 50ml, from £14.99 |
It doesn't have to be one or the other. Plenty of people wear the oil in the day and the spray at night, or layer the oil under the spray for a scent that both lasts and carries.
